Interview with dj kalon

•Where you from?

Born and raised in brooklyn NY

•What's Your nationality?
    French, Irish, African American

•In 5 words can you describe something about yourself or your djing?
Improvised , always changing, crowd pleaser

•How long you've been djing?
12 years

•What inspired you to become a dj ?
Going to Albion/ Batcave I spent most of my time listening on DJ IAN Ford’s & Hellraver’s floor .. i just thought it was so cool. He would be  behind a cage spinning.. i thought to myself “hey i can do that”  So i did research on equipment. IAN even gave me a cd with some tracks to practice with you know to help with beat matching. He was very cool, down to earth dude. i want to thank him for remembering how it was when your a “Noob”.

•Are there any Dj"s who inspire You?
louie devito, carl cox, okenfold, q-bert, yonny, IAN Ford , Hellraver, Jazzy J

•What was the first thing that told you yes I want to dj?
after the first party i did, i did well and people acknowledged it. as long as people keep appreciating my sets ill keep spinning

•What do you feel about the dj game?
It has changed drastically  i came in when cd’s were gaining popularity now its serato and tracktor  a lot easier on my back.... hey as long as we get the job doe... but i have little respect for “itunes/ipod” DJ’s. DJing is a craft no matter what you spin be true to it... i know we all cant afford 1200’s and CDJ’s  but don't use auto sync or play someone's else's mix and think you rocked the spot.  also there are too many hobby djs out there low balling us....  club and bar owners should never think its ok to give us 100$ for 5+ hours of work.. they don't respect us because we don't respect each-other.
side note.. promoters do your job and promote .. DJ’s Play music  we will build a following at the venue but shouldn't not be viewed as the sole promoter. and Owners provide a nice safe atmosphere and things to entice customers to come back for more than the good music.

•Other than djing do you do anything else produce, engineer etc?
Audio Engineer, Producer, Live Sound, Radio DJ, Security

•Are you currently working on any projects ?
Yes im working at ICREEUPREE studios in the bronx on a album co-produced by myself and 2 other producers. i also have my own ,dance, industrial and hip hop tracks in the works.. I’m also a radio personality/manager on “real hip hop 90.1 fm” we play underground and mainstream hip hop , r&b and reggae

•Are there any artist you would like to work with?
ill work with anyone serious... i don’t follow pop culture much i don’t care about their personal lives.  my motto is “get in the fuckin booth and make that money, i don’t care about your personal problems just make that music!”

•Where do you think hip-hop and djing is headed?
hip hop is always changing.. Id like to see it go back to basics. more talent less flash...we need to stop the auto tune though..  and stop singing and start spitting.

•In the next five years where do you want to see your career?
Definitely not working at bars that don’t value your time. A club residency, some guest spots and of course my radio station competing with hot 97

•Any shout outs you wanna give?
shout out to Knowledge , 90.1FM crew and everyone who believes in me and sticks by me
